Local SEO: Promoting a Services Site in Your Own City
A salon, a dental clinic, an auto service or a law firm does not need traffic from all of Russia. It needs 40–60 leads a month from its own city, preferably from the nearest districts. The logic of promotion here is different: half the result is achieved off the site, on maps and in reviews.
First: the business listing
For Russian businesses Yandex.Business and 2GIS matter more than the link profile. A complete listing — categories, opening hours, interior photos, a working phone number, a link to the site — earns impressions in the maps block above the organic results. We have seen cases where one properly finished listing brought more calls than the entire site. The data requirements are described in the Yandex help.
Geo-dependent queries work differently
For the query "dentistry" Yandex mixes in the user's region by itself, so a separate "dentistry in Kazan" page is not always needed. But "dentistry Novo-Savinovsky district" or "dental implants Kazan price" are already different intents with different competition. They need to be separated while you collect the semantics, otherwise you end up with a dozen pages cannibalizing each other.
District pages: when they work
- They work if you genuinely have several branches or serve specific districts
- They work if the page has something unique: an address, photos, a route map, the names of the specialists, reviews from local residents
- Template-generating 30 pages with the district name swapped in does not work — that is classic thin content
- A rule of thumb: one such page should cost you 3–4 hours of work, otherwise it is not worth making
Reviews as a ranking factor and as a salesperson
For a local business the volume and freshness of reviews on maps affect both positions in the geo results and the client's decision. What works in practice: ask for a review at the moment of maximum satisfaction — right after the service, with a QR code on the counter. Twenty reviews a quarter is more realistic than a hundred bought in bulk — moderation filters out sharp spikes.
What has to be on the site itself
A phone number with the city code in the header, an address with a map and directions, LocalBusiness markup, a page for each service with its price. Price is the most common gap: 6 out of 10 services sites hide it, losing the people who went off to compare with competitors. Mobile speed is critical here, because local search mostly happens on a phone on the move: details in the piece on the mobile version.
Budgets and timelines for a city of a million
A local niche is less competitive than a national one: the first organic leads usually arrive after 2–3 months rather than six. A typical scope is 25–40 hours in the first month (audit, listings, service structure) and 10–15 hours a month after that. That is substantially cheaper than national promotion and it almost always pays back faster.
What to do in the first month
- Confirm the region in Webmaster and finish the listings in Yandex.Business and 2GIS
- Split services into separate pages with prices — one service, one page
- Collect geo-dependent semantics and check that no two pages target the same query
- Set up call tracking, otherwise the whole effect stays invisible in the reports
- Start a review collection process and make one specific employee responsible for it
