Why Your Site Isn't in the Yandex Top 10: 8 Real Reasons
A familiar situation: the site is two years old, the texts are written, the links are bought, and Yandex sends 30 visits a day. The owner changes contractors, then changes them again, and every new one promises to "refine the semantics". The problem is almost never the semantics. Below are eight causes we find in 9 audits out of 10.
Reason 1. The page does not answer the query
Since 2023 Yandex has judged not word matching but whether the intent is satisfied. If for the query "CRM for an auto service" you serve a business-card page about your company while a competitor serves a tariff comparison with screenshots, you lose no matter how many links you have. Step one of an audit is to open the results page and look at the format that is already in the top: a list, a calculator, a set of instructions. If your format is different, the issue is not optimization — the page has to be rebuilt. How we do this on projects is described in the SEO promotion section.
Reason 2. Technical errors eat the crawl budget
Duplicates with UTM tags, pagination without canonical, filters that generate thousands of junk URLs. The crawler spends its visits on them while the new pages you need sit in the queue for months. On an online store with 1,200 products we once found 68,000 URLs in the index — 98% of them junk. After the cleanup, visibility grew 40% in two months without a single new link. The order of checks is in the article on the technical audit.
Reason 3. Slow loading on mobile
Yandex uses the mobile version as the primary one. If LCP on 4G sits at 5–6 seconds, rankings sag and half of your users leave before the first screen is painted. Measure your pages in PageSpeed Insights and compare the mobile figures with the desktop ones — the gap is usually shocking.
Reason 4. Weak behavioral signals
- Bounce rate above 60% when the niche average is 35–40%
- Under 40 seconds on the page for an informational article
- Returns to the results page within the first 15 seconds — the strongest negative signal
- No internal clicks: the user read the page and left, because there was nowhere else to go
Reason 5. The site is younger than its competitors, and the content budget is not there
In commercial niches Yandex is cautious with young domains: for the first 4–6 months positions jump around even when everything is done right. The mistake is to change strategy every three weeks during that period. We covered realistic timelines separately in the piece on how long SEO takes.
Reason 6. No regional targeting
A services site with no confirmed region in Yandex.Webmaster and no listing in Yandex.Business competes with the whole country at once. For a studio in Yekaterinburg that means fighting Moscow agencies with budgets in the millions. Setting the region takes an hour and produces a jump on geo-dependent queries — details in the text on local SEO.
Reason 7. The link profile looks bought
Forty anchors reading "order windows cheap" from the same doorway sites do not build trust — they earn a filter. A natural profile is 70–80% anchor-free and brand mentions. If yours is the other way round, removing links comes before writing new texts.
Reason 8. Nobody looks at the data
Half of our clients arrive with no goals configured in Metrica. Positions are checked by hand on three queries, conversions are not counted at all. In that situation every decision is made blind. The minimum: Webmaster with verified ownership, Metrica with goals for form submissions and calls, and a monthly export of queries from the "Search queries" report. Official guidance on working with the index is set out in the Yandex help for webmasters.
Where to start in practice
- Export the list of indexed pages and find the duplicates — this gives a quick win
- Compare the format of your top pages with the format competitors use in the results
- Measure mobile speed and record LCP before and after the fixes
- Check the region and the organization listing
- Set up goals so that in two months you have something to compare against
