Salon loyalty: bonuses, discounts and when they fail
It is customary to talk about loyalty programmes optimistically, which is why they are rarely talked about precisely. Let us start with the uncomfortable part: every discount and every bonus is revenue you did not receive. Sometimes it pays for itself through repeat visits, sometimes it does not. The tool works, but it is not free, and it is worth treating as a cost item that has to produce a return.
Two different mechanics that often get confused
A discount reduces the bill right now. A bonus defers the benefit to the next visit. These are fundamentally different things: a discount promises nothing about coming back, a bonus creates a reason to return but requires trust in the record-keeping. Salons often switch both on at once and get a double loss of margin without a double effect. homade has both mechanics, including bonuses and discounts by client group, but they are worth switching on deliberately — what exactly is available is listed on /saas/homade.
Client groups instead of on-the-spot decisions
The most common mistake is the "as the situation demanded" discount given by a manager. It has three problems: its volume is unpredictable, it is unfair from the clients' point of view, and it resists analysis. Client groups solve this: the rule is set once, applied uniformly, and its cost is always visible. After that you can calmly look at whether a particular group justifies itself and change the terms.
When loyalty definitely does not work
- When the reason a client leaves is service quality or attitude rather than price: a discount does not cure that.
- When everyone gets bonuses all the time — then it is simply a hidden price cut.
- When the client does not understand the mechanic: complicated accrual rules do not motivate, they irritate.
- When bonuses cannot be verified: if people argue about balances at reception, trust leaves along with the client.
- When the programme is introduced while utilisation is low — it is worth sorting out the schedule and the no-shows first.
The QR card and why the medium matters
A plastic card gets lost, a phone number gets dictated wrong, and a paper stamp gets forged both as a joke and in earnest. A QR loyalty card with a scanner removes these problems: the client keeps it on their phone, reception has a scanner, identification takes a second and does not depend on whether the manager remembers the person's face. You can see how it looks in the product at homade.ru.
Bonuses are a liability, and you need to see it
Bonus points accrued but not spent are a deferred liability of the salon. If they are not visible in reports, one day it turns out that clients are holding a noticeable sum in their accounts that will have to be given back in services. So it matters that accruals and redemptions are recorded systematically and end up in analytics alongside revenue and expenses. Then the decision to "raise the accrual rate" is made with an understanding of the price.
Mailings: a fine line
A loyalty programme almost always comes paired with mailings — otherwise clients simply do not remember their bonuses. Here it is worth staying modest: a message about accumulated bonuses or a reminder about an appointment is useful, while weekly promotions quickly turn the sender into spam. We do not quote response figures — we have no such measurements, and any conversion rate we named would be invented.
What to do, in order
First put the client base and the visits in order, so there is something to calculate from. Then introduce one simple mechanic — either groups with discounts or bonuses, but not everything at once. Watch it for a couple of months through the reports. And only then add complexity. You can start on the free Solo plan, followed by Start at 1 490 ₽, Business at 3 990 ₽, Pro at 8 900 ₽ and Network at 9 900 ₽ per branch — it is all gathered on our SaaS platforms. For setup questions write to technical support, and if you need your own loyalty logic, that is CRM and ERP development.
